From Thesis to Book: Spreading Knowledge Beyond Academia
Akademi Transformasi Tesis & Penerbitan (ATTP) empowers researchers and postgraduate students to transform their academic theses into structured, reader-friendly, and impactful books. Supported by the trademark Tesis Jadi Buku™ (Thesis-to-Book), ATTP offers its flagship Bengkel Tesis Jadi Buku™ (Thesis-to-Book Workshop) guided by the official training module Step-by-Step Menukarkan Tesis Kepada Buku (Step-by-Step Guide: Transforming a Thesis into a Book). This unique programme is designed not only to bridge the gap between academic research and public readership but also to build sustainable pathways for scholarly publishing.
As of September 2025, Penerbitan Buku Pena (PBP) is supporting fifteen active clients who are undergoing the Tesis Jadi Buku™ Write–Edit–Publish process. More than half of them, 53.3%, are PhD holders, while the rest include lecturers, researchers, teachers, a retiree, and a syariah officer. Interestingly, nearly half of these clients expressed strong interest in converting not only their PhD theses but also undergraduate dissertations and project papers into narrative-style books. Their shared challenges reflect the realities faced by many academics today: simplifying complex jargon, overcoming limited writing skills and time, managing the fear of plagiarism, and struggling to adapt academic tone into a more reader-friendly style. Some participants also pointed out negative experiences with previous editorial processes that lacked follow-up guidance, limited access to practical and affordable workshops, and uncertainty about book structure and publishing steps. What resonated most strongly was a common request: “We are looking for a publisher who understands the academic world and can guide us to create meaningful books for the public.” This insight highlights the urgent need for Tesis Jadi Buku™ to be developed not just as a service but as a scalable academic publishing model that meets the needs of scholars and society alike.
The recent online Tesis Jadi Buku™ Workshop held on 2 August 2025 gathered sixteen participants, eight of whom provided structured feedback through the official post-event evaluation form. The overall satisfaction rating stood at 4.12 out of 5, with most respondents praising the clarity, energy, and engagement of the trainer, Dr. Nabilaa Mohamed. While five participants described the module as very helpful and easy to understand, others suggested areas for improvement and requested longer sessions or more individualised guidance. The feedback further revealed a strong demand for structured follow-up, extended coaching, and continued support in applying the techniques introduced. This reflects a growing interest in not only attending the workshop but also investing in long-term transformation of theses into books.
A significant institutional milestone was achieved when PBP was invited by the Institut Terjemahan & Buku Malaysia (ITBM) to deliver an exclusive in-person training session for the Editorial team from the Publishing Department on 10 June 2025. The workshop, titled Step-by-Step Menukarkan Tesis Kepada Buku, was attended by fifteen ITBM editors and publishing staff. The training exposed participants to structured frameworks, practical rewriting techniques, and clinical case discussions, focusing on how academic theses could be restructured into multiple types of publishable books. Formal evaluation conducted by ITBM showed strong appreciation for the relevance of the module, especially its applicability to editorial practice, with the most valuable aspects being the restructuring of thesis content into book format and the transformation of academic sentences into reader-friendly paragraphs. Suggestions for improvement included incorporating more diverse thesis examples, providing supplementary practice materials, and aligning the workshop more closely with ITBM’s editorial style. Importantly, all respondents expressed openness to future collaboration and co-publication opportunities with PBP, further strengthening the institutional recognition of Tesis Jadi Buku™.
Building on this momentum, the growth of Tesis Jadi Buku™ reached another major milestone on 28 August 2025, when PBP signed a formal Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with UNITI Asia Group (UAG) through UNITI Office Sdn. Bhd., Yayasan UNITI (YU) and the UNITI Madani Entrepreneurship Centre (UMEC). This strategic partnership is designed to expand the reach of the Tesis Jadi Buku™ Workshop into major universities across Malaysia. With the institutional network and support of UAG, ATTP is now positioned not only as a training provider but also as a nationally recognised academic development programme, capable of scaling its impact across higher education institutions.
The credibility of ATTP is anchored not only in its training delivery but also in its legal and professional recognition. Tesis Jadi Buku™ is a trademark of Penerbitan Buku Pena (PBP), while the Step-by-Step Menukarkan Tesis Kepada Buku module is copyrighted with the Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO) under registration number CRLY2025WO5676 and recognised by the Institut Terjemahan & Buku Malaysia (ITBM). More recently, PBP’s collaboration with Notion Press has expanded the global reach of the Tesis Jadi Buku™ model, ensuring that Malaysian scholarly works can now find audiences far beyond national borders.
Looking ahead, PBP is preparing to collaborate with BOOKHERO, a leading local printing and distribution partner. This initiative is designed to meet the growing demand from Malaysian clients who prefer local production and faster distribution channels. By combining PBP’s editorial expertise with BOOKHERO’s strong local presence, the Tesis Jadi Buku™ model will become even more accessible, ensuring that scholars and writers have both international and domestic pathways to bring their work into print and circulation.
Through these achievements, ATTP continues to build its reputation as a credible platform for transforming theses into books, positioning PBP not only as a publisher but also as a trusted academic training provider that bridges the gap between the academic and publishing worlds.
